SASSA Grant Payment Increased Again, Agency Spokesperson Clarifies the Boost

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has introduced slight increases to various social grants, aiming to provide modest financial relief to the country’s most vulnerable citizens. These new grant amounts began distribution in October, with SASSA focusing on smooth and timely delivery to ensure that beneficiaries experience minimal disruptions.

SASSA Grant Payment Increased Again

The increases apply to several key grants. The old age pension, for example, has received a small boost:

• For individuals under 75 years of age: Increased from R2,180 to R2,190
• For individuals aged 75 and older: Increased from R2,200 to R2,210

Although these increments amount to just R10 per month, they reflect SASSA’s ongoing effort to provide aid within the limits of its budget. Similar adjustments have been made to other grants:

• Disability Grant: Increased by R10
• Care Dependency Grant: Increased by R10
• War Veterans Grant: Increased by R10

However, the Child Support Grant did not receive an increase during this adjustment period. These changes come after an earlier adjustment in April 2024, when other grant categories were also raised.

Reason Behind the R10 Increase

The R10 increase may seem small, especially against rising living costs, prompting questions about why the adjustments have been limited to this amount. Paseka Letsatsi, a spokesperson for SASSA, explained that the size of the increase is determined by budgetary constraints set by the Department of Social Development and the National Treasury. SASSA’s role is to administer the funds within these guidelines, which are shaped by broader economic conditions and priorities.

South Africa’s social grant budget is substantial, standing at R265 billion. This budget supports millions of people across various grant categories. However, due to the country’s challenging economic environment and fiscal constraints, the National Treasury must carefully balance these funds, which limits the potential for larger grant increases.

Improvements in SASSA’s Payment Process

SASSA has implemented a staggered payment schedule to improve the grant distribution process. This approach is designed to reduce congestion at payment points, particularly for vulnerable groups like the elderly and disabled. Payments are spread out from the 2nd to the 4th of each month, allowing for more orderly and safer disbursement.

Letsatsi observed that this system is designed to reduce the long queues and crowded situations that frequently occur when younger, more physically capable beneficiaries, like those who receive Child Support Grants, pick up their payments at the same time as the elderly and disabled. This phased schedule is intended to prioritize the needs of the most vulnerable.

Addressing Accessibility Issues at Cash Pay Points

In rural areas, SASSA faced criticism due to the closure of certain cash pay points, which created access issues for many beneficiaries. For individuals in remote locations, traveling long distances to collect grants can be a significant burden, sometimes costing up to R300 in transportation expenses.

In response, SASSA is reassessing its strategy and is working to restore services in areas with limited infrastructure. The agency is committed to ensuring that beneficiaries living in these remote areas can access their grants without spending a large portion on transportation.

Promoting Safer Transactions through Bank Cards

SASSA continues to encourage beneficiaries to use their bank cards for transactions instead of withdrawing their entire grant amount in cash. By using bank cards, recipients can reduce the risk of theft and gain more flexibility in accessing their funds as needed. Cards can be used at various retail stores and ATMs, making them a safer and more convenient option for many.

Despite the modest increases in grants, SASSA remains focused on evolving its payment systems to better serve South Africans’ needs.
